Three On, One Off explores the desire for financial gain, in particular, how this desire can promote a disconnectedness from the fundamental things that matter: building meaningful relationships with people and living with integrity. The play portrays the circumstances of characters involved in the fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) employment culture in the mining industry, and each are at a different stage of their FIFO experience. Some need to continue to meet financial pressures, others don’t know another way of life. But all are dealing with the effects of this lifestyle: an accumulation of problems such as marriage breakdown, insufficient parent/child relationships, a feeling of isolation, drug and alcohol abuse and depression.
Therefore, the play shows the implications on society when an employment culture is out of touch with the needs of the individual and the family unit, because it is driven by the desire to get ahead and be financially secure.
